Tragedy Strikes Indian Crew in Black Sea
Four Indian merchant navy sailors were tragically killed following a violent missile strike on a commercial vessel near Ukraine’s Odesa port. The Guinea-Bissau-flagged general cargo ship, MV Golden Leo, came under fire shortly after departing the harbor with a shipment of grain. Consequently, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) issued an unequivocal condemnation of the strike. This heartbreaking incident marks the very first instance of Indian seafarers losing their lives within the active Russia-Ukraine conflict zone.
India Summons Diplomat and Demands Safety Accords
The government acted swiftly on the diplomatic front. The MEA summoned Russian Charge d’Affaires Vladimir Ladanov to register New Delhi’s grave concerns and strong protest against the targeting of civilian vessels. Furthermore, Indian authorities explicitly conveyed that endangering the lives of innocent commercial crews is entirely unacceptable.
Initially, the cargo vessel was navigating Ukraine’s established maritime corridor when three cruise missiles struck its hull. Because the impact triggered a major fire, a total of 10 crew members perished. This included four Indian nationals and six Syrian seafarers. Meanwhile, another Indian sailor was rescued in a critical condition and remains hospitalised.
Victims Identified Amid Rising Geopolitical Fears
According to the latest ground updates, two of the deceased Indian crew members have been formally identified. They are 26-year-old Chief Officer Akhil Jovan from Kerala and 21-year-old Ordinary Seaman Abhishek Nishad from Uttar Pradesh. The identification of the remaining two bodies is currently pending due to severe burn injuries.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha criticized the offensive, alleging that civilian shipping is being targeted intentionally. Therefore, India has demanded that all warring nations strictly preserve the freedom of navigation. The MEA reiterated that commercial vessels must never be transformed into military targets during active warfare.
