Security Forces Seal Shambhu Border
Massive tension flared up at the Shambhu border today. Security forces heavily fortified the entry point between Punjab and Haryana. They deployed multi-layered barricades to block thousands of marching farmers. The agricultural workers from Punjab were heading toward New Delhi. They planned to hold a mega Kisan Mahapanchayat at Kisan Ghat. However, authorities completely sealed the interstate crossing. This action was taken to prevent the massive convoy from advancing further into the national capital.
Farmers Unite Against Free Trade Pact
The sudden agitation is organized by the Desh Bachao Morcha. Prominent agricultural unions are actively participating in this movement. Consequently, thousands of demonstrators have gathered at the border. They are fiercely protesting against the proposed India-US Free Trade Agreement (FTA).
Initially, the mobilization remained contained within Punjab. However, the situation quickly escalated as the convoy approached the Ghaggar river bridge. The protestors strongly argue that the international trade deal will severely damage domestic agricultural markets. Furthermore, they fear it will allow heavily subsidized American imports into India. This could drastically lower the incomes of local farming families. Therefore, they want the central government to scrap the proposed trade framework entirely.
Heavy Security Deployment Triggers Gridlock
Meanwhile, the local administration has turned the transit point into a fortress. Police forces installed massive concrete blocks and iron spikes near the bridge. Additionally, they placed water cannons and anti-riot gear on standby. The Ambala administration also imposed strict prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). Consequently, gatherings of five or more people stand banned in the notified area.
Because of the sudden border closure, the Ambala Police issued an urgent traffic advisory. They have urged commuters travelling between Delhi and Punjab to take alternative routes via Lalru and Zirakpur. Despite these strict restrictions, farmer leaders accused the government of suppressing their democratic right to peaceful protest.
Standoff Continues at Border Encampment
Undoubtedly, this sudden confrontation echoes the intense agrarian unrest seen in previous years. Because they were denied entry, the farmers established a temporary protest encampment directly at the blocked border site.
