Activist Defiant Despite Medical Evacuation
Renowned climate activist and educator Sonam Wangchuk announced that he will continue his indefinite hunger strike. He is currently admitted to the government-run Safdarjung Hospital in New Delhi. The Delhi Police forcibly shifted him to the facility from Jantar Mantar following a decline in his health parameters. However, Wangchuk remains resolute in his mission. Protesting Police Brutality on Student Marchers
The activist decided to extend his fast after witnessing the heavy-handed police action against student demonstrators. Thousands of youth marchers under the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) banner were marching toward the Sansad Bhawan. They were demanding accountability for the NEET-UG paper leak scandal.
Consequently, the police used strict measures to block the peaceful “Sansad Chalo” march. In a handwritten statement from the hospital, Wangchuk strongly condemned this state action. Furthermore, he announced that his strike will now continue until the detained youth leaders are allowed to meet parliamentarians. Alternatively, he demanded that the leaders be permitted to meet him inside the hospital room.
Health Status and Legal Tussles
Meanwhile, medical authorities at Safdarjung Hospital released an official health update. The hospital administration confirmed that Wangchuk is currently stable but very weak. He has completed over 20 days of his fast. Therefore, he is showing signs of severe dehydration and low blood sugar levels. Despite explicit medical advice, the activist has continuously refused intravenous (IV) fluids and glucose. He is only consuming basic oral rehydration salts.
Meanwhile, the protest has triggered a major legal battle. His wife, Gitanjali Angmo, approached the Delhi High Court. She challenged his forced confinement at the government hospital. Consequently, the High Court has allowed Wangchuk to be transferred to the privately-run Medanta Hospital for independent medical supervision.
The Standoff Intensifies
Undoubtedly, Wangchuk’s fast has added immense emotional weight to the ongoing educational reform movement. The activist reiterated that he will not back down until the government fixes absolute accountability for the examination discrepancies.
