Jammu & Kashmir floods: Monsoon rains have triggered devastating flash floods and severe landslides across Jammu and Kashmir. Tragically, the rain fury has claimed at least 12 lives in the twin border districts of Poonch and Rajouri. Multiple cloudbursts have flattened houses. Raging rivers have also swept away vehicles in low-lying areas. Because of the extreme weather, the local administration has launched massive rescue operations. The Army and disaster response forces are working relentlessly to save stranded citizens.
Landslides Wreak Havoc in Poonch and Rajouri
The regional devastation is concentrated heavily in the Surankote tehsil of Poonch. Mudslides have buried several residential structures under thick debris. Meanwhile, the neighboring Rajouri district faces similar catastrophic conditions. Incessant downpours have completely cut off road connectivity. Therefore, reaching remote mountain villages has become incredibly difficult for emergency teams. Furthermore, the local administration has opened the gates of major dams. Amarnath Yatra Temporarily Halted for Safety
Due to the worsening weather conditions, authorities have temporarily suspended the annual Amarnath Yatra. Pilgrims are strictly barred from proceeding via the Baltal and Chandanwari routes. Heavy landslides have made the high-altitude tracks highly unstable. Consequently, thousands of devotees remain safely stationed at various base camps. Security forces have also blocked vehicle movement on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway. Officials state that the pilgrimage will resume only after the routes are cleared of debris.
High Alert Issued as More Rains Predicted
The Meteorological Department has issued a grim forecast for the region. Heavy to extremely heavy rainfall will likely continue over the next few days. Consequently, a high alert remains active in all vulnerable zones. The government has already extended school vacations to protect children. In conclusion, the current situation remains critical. Citizens are advised to strictly avoid traveling near swollen rivers and landslide-prone cliffs.
