Supreme Court Intervenes in Ayodhya Controversy

Ram Mandir donation row

The Supreme Court of India heard a batch of petitions regarding the alleged theft and financial embezzlement of public donations at the Ayodhya Ram Temple. A high-profile bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi, and Justice V. Mohana presided over the critical matter. During the intense proceedings, the apex court strictly cautioned all involved litigants and political parties against politicising the issue. The top court explicitly clarified that the ongoing controversy is a straightforward case of criminal offense. Therefore, the legal focus must remain strictly on ensuring a transparent and fair investigation.

Strict Orders on Maintaining Clear Records

Initially, the legal dispute reached the top court through public interest litigations seeking a court-monitored CBI investigation. Senior advocates representing the petitioners raised alarming concerns regarding missing funds. They argued that enormous amounts of cash, gold, and silver offered by crores of devotees had reportedly vanished without proper tracking.

Consequently, the bench emphasized that proper inventory and financial transparency are absolutely vital. Chief Justice Surya Kant directed that a rigorous accounting process must protect public faith. Furthermore, the court advised the state to ensure that digital financial footprints remain completely preserved from any potential tampering.

State Police Actions and Current Detentions

Meanwhile, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Uttar Pradesh government, presented an active status report. He informed the bench that the state had already registered a formal First Information Report (FIR) following an internal inquiry. Based on CCTV evidence, the state police have successfully arrested eight accused individuals, including six temple employees. Authorities have also recovered approximately ₹80 lakh out of the siphoned temple donations.

Because a Special Investigation Team (SIT) is already monitoring the local police probe, the government argued against a federal transfer. However, the Supreme Court suggested refining the oversight structure. It instructed the Solicitor General to discuss appointing a senior IPS officer, such as the IG of the Lucknow range, to spearhead the core investigation team.

Ensuring Accountability for Millions of Devotees

Undoubtedly, the alleged irregularities have triggered severe public anxiety and sharp national debates. The court noted that public emotion should not interfere with standard penal laws.

In conclusion, the Supreme Court posted the matter for its next comprehensive hearing on July 27, 2026. The Uttar Pradesh administration will apprise the court of the specific administrative steps taken to overhaul the temple’s donation system. Devotees across the country are now awaiting a structured, transparent mechanism to prevent any future financial leaks.
